| description | In woven carbon composites manufacturing, the fabrication process is a crucial stage where it could directly influence the final properties of the product. The parameters such as consolidation quality will determine the amount of the voids entrapped inside certain composite panels and reduce their strength. Thus, in this study, there relationship between the consolidation parameters and compression strength is evaluated. The composite was fabricated by using combination of vacuum compression followed by curing in the autoclave. During consolidation stage, four different parameters were used, which are single vacuum pot for all 12 layers woven carbon, combination of single vacuum pot and compaction at each 4 layers of laminas. The third parameter is usage of 4 vacuum pots and finally combination of 4 vacuums pots with compaction. The effect of the consolidation on the physical and mechanical properties of the laminate composite was characterized using void content testing, compression testing and optical microscopy. Results showed that the void content using single vacuum method (0.67%) is decreased with combination of single vacuum and compaction ( 0.59%) and 4 vacuums pots ( 0.54%) and lastly compaction and 4 vacuums pots ( 0.36%). The compression strength of the composite is also increased with decreased of void content from 561.9 MPa to 706.1MPa for single vacuum and combination of 4 pot vacuums and compaction respectively. The fracture surface revealed that the composite failed under mix mode indicating of delamination to shear failure with the kink zone. |
