Project management leadership traits and COVID-19 implications on Malaysian construction industry

The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to Malaysia's construction industry – disrupting project timelines, supply chains, and financial stability. Effective project management leadership emerged as a critical factor in navigating these challenging times. This study was guided by two objectives: (1) to identify the pandemic's impact and strategies in Malaysia's construction sector and (2) to determine project management leadership traits during the pandemic. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving thematic and content analysis of data collected through semi-structured interviews with industry professionals. The study's findings revealed significant disruptions across various aspects of the construction industry, including supply chain management, workforce safety concerns, financial implications, regulatory hurdles, and technological integration. Essential leadership traits identified included effective communication, adaptability, strategic decision-making, empathy, and resilience. Based on the findings, recommendations were provided to fortify the resilience and preparedness of Malaysia's construction industry. These included diversifying supply chains, prioritizing workforce safety, bolstering financial risk management, embracing technological integration, fostering collaboration, cultivating leadership resilience, and prioritizing continuous learning and adaptation. Implementation of these recommendations could enhance project management practices and ensure continuity amidst disruptions. In conclusion, this research provide evidence on the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Malaysia's construction industry and offered practical recommendations to navigate uncertainties effectively. By fostering adaptive leadership and implementing robust strategies, construction firms could emerge stronger from the crisis and drive sustainable success in the postpandemic era.
