Description
Résumé:Choosing a career as a prison officer is different from any other field of work as it involves the security aspects of operation and rehabilitation. This requires prison officials to deal with working hours on a rotation basis to ensure the security and safety in the Prisons Department. Shift duty practiced in uniform organizations such as Prisons Department has caused a lot of implications on the staffs, especially on health matters such as emotional, mental and physical aspects. Observations were carried out at most of the government departments and private organizations; however less focus was given in uniform organizations. In fact the Prison Department staffs also face emotional, mental and physical challenges. Therefore this study is aimed to identify the level and influence of shift duty on the emotional, physical and mental aspect of prison officer in Pokok Sena Prison, in Kedah. The study was conducted in a cross sectional survey. Data was collected using questionnaire distributed to 300 prison officers as respondents. Samples were selected randomly among the officers. Data were analyzed using the t-test, correlation and descriptive analysis. The result shows that shift duty has a high impact on the emotional and mental aspects compared with officers who do not work in shift duty. Thus, the factor of shift duty should be taken seriously into account by prison management when they want to disseminate the task to their officer. Further results of this study contribute to the literature review related to the psychological and organizational policy on shift duty in uniform organization.
