description The phenomenon of transferring a text to another text either directly or indirectly is commonly experienced by any authors in the process of creating literary works. Transfers could take place physically or through the author's environmental experience. However, the extent of the authors' awareness of the existence of other texts in the creation of new works is still an issue whether or not it is intended. In this regard, the study aims to examine the principle of transformation appropriated in Ayahanda, a novel written by Azizi Haji Abdullah, the winner of the 1987 S. E. A. Writer Award, specifically through the author’s use of hypograms from eleven short stories. Intertextual theory, specifically formal and abstract transformative methods, was employed to examine the transformation that occurred in the novel. The findings show that the novel is a result of the transformation, namely in the form of hypograms of eleven previous short stories. The transformation took place either through visible sources found in physical texts or abstract sources from the author’s experiences and ideas. The transformation is performed through the process of modification in the form of affirmations, innovations and negations involving the process of conversion, development, absorption, similarity or opposition to the original text, resulting in the production of a new text. The results also explain that the hypogram text plays an important role in creating transformative texts or new texts. The findings of this study are expected to give the public an understanding that the literary text is not a self-contained text.
