description In today’s dynamic world, organizations need to deal with effective knowledge management in converting data into information towards creating valuable knowledge for sustaining competitive advantage. However, these tasks have proven to be quite challenging, particularly with regard to knowledge creation, since it deals with the individual’s day-to-day activities and skills. Suitable tools need to be identified to retain individual knowledge and experiences. The oil and gas (O&G) sector has been accumulating huge knowledge through several centuries of operations. Faced with aging staff and increased staff turnover, it is vital for organizations to maintain their knowledge. The study main objective is to propose a framework for a knowledge sharing system (KSS) that can optimize the KSS design process. This study explored the need for a KSS design framework by evaluating eight knowledge management (KM) models. Nonaka SECI was merged with the Zachman enterprise framework (ZEF) to develop a new KSS framework. The proposed framework was validated through an expert review process and the final framework was updated accordingly. System designers could use the framework to design a KSS that could be easily developed by software developers. A qualitative research was used to analyses the data collected through online survey, interviews with O&G industry players, and documents review. The findings highlight that the loss of knowledge was due to staff retirement and turnover. This indicates that organizations need to address this issue by introducing KSSs. KSS design framework would be helpful in the processes of knowledge creation, sharing, and storage (retention). The contribution of this research will add to the body of knowledge in the domain of KM by providing a comparison of the different KM models and by proposing a KSS framework. Knowledge management, Knowledge sharing system framework, Zachman Enterprise Framework, Knowledge management system design and development, Nonaka SECI Model.
