description This study discusses the major themes related to the problems of women and natural ecology in the prose texts of Lung Ying-tai. Feminist theories were used to reveal the difficulties of women living in a patriarchal society over a prolonged period. These theories were also used to criticise the inequitable family practices and social systems to enable traditional women to acquire a better understanding of their own destiny. Lung Ying-tai reflected on the traditional gender roles in her writing and advocated female independence as well as demanded for gender equality. At the same time, she encouraged modern women to pursue their dreams and ambitions by using their own strengths to realise a better future for themselves. Moreover, theories of ecological criticism were also used to analyse Lung Ying-tai’s prose texts that reflected the problems of ecology. The author criticised human greed which placed great emphasis on economic benefits that subsequently led to the exploitation of the limited resources of the earth resulting in a serious imbalance of the natural ecological environment and sufferings to human beings. Her concerns about the ecological crisis were demonstrated through the evocation of ecological beauty in her writing in an attempt to elicit public awareness on the importance of a balanced natural ecology. To encourage more readers to support the work of environmental protection, Lung Ying-tai strongly advocated public participation in campaigns on loving trees and suggested the use of legislation to protect the living spaces of the natural ecological environment.
