However, the diligence of grammarians in studying sentences has led to the development of this type of sentence, and they soon arrived to differing opinions as to its exact number. Though they are without a syntactic function, these sentences still occupy a position in the sentence structure. The sentences of the hadith, despite their soundness, have only received their deserved attention in syntactic research in recent periods, in contrast to those of the Noble Qur’ān and poems and proses of the Arabs. This, then, forms the research problem: the apparent neglect of hadith sentences in syntactic studies. This thesis, therefore, attempts to chronologically and analytically trace the nomenclatures of those sentences without a syntactic function. It also discusses the structures of such sentences and applies them to the prophetic and noble hadiths—narrated in the words of the Venerable Apostle pbuh by Umm Salamah ra—examining their patterns and revealing their rhetorical meanings according to their respective contexts. This study aims to analyze the emergence and development of the nomenclatures of these sentences, elucidating their structures and patterns, from the two perspectives of syntax and rhetoric. Additionally, it seeks to expound the rhetorical purposes and meanings of such sentences in the prophetic and noble hadiths narrated in the words of the Venerable Apostle pbuh. The robust connection between this research and the words of the Prophet peace be upon him manifests in its discussion of prophetic traditions that were narrated in his words by his wife, Umm Salamah ra, in the Musnad of Imam Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, may Allah’s mercy be upon him. The thesis employed the deductive approach and descriptive-analytical method to describe and analyze the hadiths narrated in the words of the Venerable Apostle pbuh. Only authentic hadiths were included and interpreted, while those transmitted in meaning, recurring, or weak were excepted. The sentences without a syntactic function in the hadiths were then extracted and classified to clarify their structures in their respective positions in the hadith texts and to expound their rhetorical purposes. The study found a wealth of syntactic and rhetorical nomenclatures for sentences without a syntactic function. Some of these have remained as mere writings, never used, while others only appeared after the discussion on the classification of sentences according to its syntactic function has ripened. The thesis, additionally, revealed that excepting exegetical sentences, all forms of sentences without a syntactic function—based on the classification that it adopted—were found in the prophetic hadiths that were narrated in his words by his wife, Umm Salamah da, in the Musnad of Imam Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, may Allah’s mercy be upon him. The structures and patterns of these sentences are identical to those found in the sentences of the Qur’ān and Arabic speech. Another finding was that those sentences formed various rhetorical purposes, carrying detailed meanings, to illuminate subjects concerning the tolerant Islamic faith. This thesis may serve as a prelude to further investigations on such sentences in Makkī or Madanī hadiths—a path not taken by this study. Future studies may delve deeper into the rhetorical purposes and patterns of such sentences in both types of hadiths to realize the goal of Islamic Science University of Malaysia of integrating rational and revealed sciences. 2024-05-29T05:13:52Z 2024-05-29T05:13:52Z 2021-04 text::thesis::doctoral thesis https://oarep.usim.edu.my/handle/123456789/12983 other Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia
