Description
Summary:The radiator is a significant component of a vehicle engine that is used as a part of cooling system. As it is function to absorbed heat from the engine and then transferred to the air. The purpose of this study is to analyse and improve the radiator performance in spark ignition (SI) engine cooling system. The model design configuration used to test is a Proton Wira 1.5L engine cooling system. The base fluids were prepared by considering 20%, 30% 40%, 50%, and 60% of ethylene glycol volume concentration. Each of the coolant concentrations was tested with the same aluminium flat tube and difference fins material which is aluminium, brass and copper. This study was performed by using ANSYS Fluent software and compared with mathematical calculation to know the accuracy of the simulation. Based on the result of the analysis, it was concluded that the largest decrement of coolant outlet temperature occurred when using copper fins material. This is because copper has the lowest temperature reading since it has a high thermal conductivity which is 387.6W/m.K. Furthermore, copper also has the lowest rate of change increase between temperature coolant outlet and the percentage of coolant concentration which is 0.3567°C/% compared to aluminium (0.6655°C/%) and brass (0.6980°C/%). In this finding also state that the highest heat flux was produced when copper fins is used. This is because the density of copper is higher compared to aluminium and brass. As the molecules arrangement are closely packed and due to the intermolecular vibration, heat transfer conduction will be higher compared to other fins materials. Besides, water coolant ratio was applied to increase the heat transfer performance of the fluid. In general, water has high thermal conductivity, lower viscosity, and higher heat capacity than pure glycol. Hence, the solutions with lower glycol concentrations will have superior heat transfer performance than a solution with higher glycol concentrations.
