Fauzi Hamid, supervisor Chemical engineering Also available in printed version Extracting and purifying the lignin from the oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) has been successfully produced a new demulsifier. The purified lignin as demulsifier with different concentration of lignin will then be compared with the commercial demulsifier, Benzalkonium Chloride. The extracted of lignin from EFB was obtained through several processes. Firstly, the empty fruit bunch fibers EFB were soaked into water for two days to remove dirt before the pulping process. This extraction process is a process to remove the lignin and also other organic compounds in the EFB. The organic compounds remove from the EFB are in form of solution and this solution can be notified as the black liquor by using the sodium hydroxide solution at temperature of 170oC for three hours. The black liquor then will be dissolved in the 20% of sulfuric acids solution by acidifying the black liquor to the pH 2. Finally, the pH 2 solution was filtered and then dried in oven for 24 hours at temperature of 55oC. The purified lignin produced will be used to form the demulsifier which adding the solvent, 75% of xylene with lignin. The solution was heated at temperature of 60oC for 2 hours. Laboratory test has been conducted to investigate the performance of this new demulsifier towards the emulsion. It has been conducted under several conditions which include the different level of concentration; 1500 ppm, 2000 ppm and 3000 ppm and also the temperature; at room temperature, 50oC and also at 100oC. From the results, it can be conclude that the higher concentration of lignin perform better compared to lower concentration of lignin and benzalkonium chloride as demulsifier. This show how the lignin extracted from EFB can be a good demulsifier to breaking the emulsion at high temperature zulaihi UTM 69 p.
