It is characterized by high color, BOD, COD, variable pH and should be treated before discharging into the environment. A method that widely used nowadays is coagulation/flocculation using selected coagulant. Chitosan is a friendly environment coagulant due to its excellent properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Grafting coagulant can enhanced the performance of coagulation/flocculation. The performance of coagulation/flocculation was studied using a single chitosan and grafted chitosan. Combination of chitosan-PAM synthesized by a microwave technology increased the efficiency of the coagulation process. The microwave synthesis was run with exposed time, 76s and power, 640MW (80% from full power). Acidic medium was the best condition for flocculation with optimum pH of 3 and 4 using Ch-g-PAM and chitosan respectively. The longer settling time, the better flocculation performance as long as the flocs did not break. 60-90 minutes was the best settling time with optimum dosage of 0.1 g for both coagulants.
