As a result, good sites for construction work have been reduced. In this situation, construction on sandy soil also takes place which generally has a problem of low bearing capacity if the soil is not densely packed. Traditional method to improve bearing capacity of shallow foundation constructed on this type of soil can cause construction cost to be increased. One of the non-traditional methods in soil reinforcement is by using geosynthetic product such as geocell. The objectives of this project are to determine the optimum depth (u) of geocell placed in medium dense sand, to determine the effect of width (b) and height (h) of geocell placed at optimum depth in medium dense sand, and to determine the improving factor of reinforced sand. The physical modelling test was conducted by depositing the sand into a test tank of 600 mm width x 600 mm length x 600 mm height. To perform physical modeling test, this tank was filled with sand via raining technique and the sand was densified to achieve the state of 50% relative density. Hand-made geocell by using Geogrid TenCate Mirafi® BXG120 was used in the experiment. Test results show that at the depth of 7.5 mm from base of circular footing, with width and height of geocell equals to 180 mm and 55 mm, it experienced the highest ultimate bearing capacity of 76.45 kPa. Bearing capacity of shallow foundation with the geocell placed at the depth of 7.5mm showed an improving of up to 3.8 times that of the unreinforced sand. At this optimum depth, with increasing the width and height of geocell, the bearing capacity of circular footing also increased. Optimum width and height of geocell were 240 mm and 55 mm, respectively. The bearing capacity at optimum width and height were increased by a factor up to 5.2 times of the unreinforced sand. As a conclusion, the improvement of bearing capacity for shallow foundation on optimum width (240 mm) and optimum height (55 mm) of geocell-reinforced sand, placed at optimum depth (7.5 mm) was the most pronounced for medium dense sand fahmimoksen UTM 80 p.
