Zaid Muhammad Zaly Shah Muhammad Hussein, supervisor Containerization -- Malaysia Unitized cargo systems Also available in printed version : TA1215 Z35 2013 raf The container haulage industry in Malaysia involves a huge bank of fixed assets and it is one of the key components in determining the efficiency of the logistics system that support the country’s economy. Rapid increase of the export and import through Malaysian sea ports in the 1980s and 1990s has caused the congestion at Malaysian sea ports. As a result, the Malaysian government decided to liberalise the container haulage industry by issuing operating licences to transportation companies, breaking up the oligopolistic industry which was dominated by five companies, namely, Kontena Nasional Berhad, MISC Haulage Services Sdn. Bhd., Konsortium Logistik Berhad, Shapadu Kontena Sdn. Bhd. and Multi-Modal Freight Sdn. Bhd. However, there is no evidence that a scientific study on the efficiency of the container haulage system been done. This thesis attempts to analyse the efficiency of Malaysian container haulage industry by using empirical quantitative analysis approach, developing the model that can be used to analyse the comparative efficiency of the container haulage companies. This will address the problem in the industry where the current measure of performance fails to completely analyse the operational efficiency of the container haulage companies, hence do not allow these companies to understand their level of competitiveness and could not lead them to be in the efficient frontier. The objectives of this research are to develop a model for application in the container haulage industry, to evaluate the performance of Malaysian container haulage industry by employing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) as performance measurement tool and to develop operating strategies for respective container haulage companies to bring them to the efficient frontier. Empirical data are collected from the respective container haulage companies under investigation through the interview of the industry practitioners and analysed using the DEA Solver-Pro 8.0 software. This research suggested that the analysis on the technical efficiency of the container haulage companies can be done by using the model developed for application in the Malaysian container haulage industry. Any other container haulage industry that have similar operating characteristics could also possibly use the model to analyse their efficiencies. This research also identified and tested the suitable DEA model that can be applied in the Malaysian container haulage industry. The results of this research has identified Multi-Modal Freight Sdn Bhd and MISC Haulage Services Sdn Bhd as inefficient while Kontena Nasional Berhad and Konsortium Logistik Berhad are on efficient frontier. This research also has shown the new way of performance measurement for Malaysian container haulage industry and can be used by respective container haulage companies to strategise themselves to be at the efficient frontier to face the ever competitive environment in the transportation industry atiff UTM 189 p.
