GPR performance in terms of propagation velocity, penetration depth of electromagnetic waves, dielectric permittivity and the effectiveness is influenced soil characteristics. It is difficult to define the soil parameter such as velocity, dielectric permittivity and moisture content from GPR data. This soil parameter can be used to map the soil characteristics. One common approach to estimate the relationship of moisture content in the soil is by determining the calculation from velocity of electromagnetic wave propagates in the soil and do the assumption the variation of the dielectric permittivity of the material through a soil. Then, to determine the dielectric permittivity is based on the parameters of the raw data that collected by GPR. In this study, the GPR has been exploited to determine the soil parameters and finally contributes to the soil characteristics mapping. Dielectric permittivity can be obtained by using the Topp equation which expressed the relationship between moisture content and dielectric permittivity. By using the Topp equation and GPR data, one can determine the water content of the soil and directly one of the soil characteristics of the soil. Consequently, these parameters can be used to generate soil thematic maps which will help users to assess the relative effectiveness of GPR around the mapped area depending on soil types atiff UTM 83 p.
