This has resulted an over exploitation to the marine area, thus the effective management needs to be implemented in order to sustain the marine area by developing the marine spatial data infrastructure (SDI). The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has come out with the new standard known as the S-100 to standardize the marine management. However, there is no development has been made for marine SDI for Malaysian waters and the management of marine environment for Malaysia also was not conformed to the standard set by IHO. The aim of this study is to develop the Feature Data Dictionary for Malaysian waters in order to identify the marine features and to make it available publicly to enhance the marine spatial data management and to design the marine SDI data model based on the GIS concepts and conformed to the standard of S-100 and Malaysian Standard for geographic information/geomatics - features and attribute codes (MS1759). The objectives of this study are to develop the Feature Data Dictionaries for Malaysian waters and to design the marine SDI data model based on S-100 and MS1759. CARIS GIS 4.4a and ArcGIS Desktop 9.3 have been used to develop the marine spatial data infrastructure for Malaysian waters. The result obtained from this study is the marine features data dictionary which conformed to the standard of S-100 and MS1759 and the feature data model for Malaysian waters which is the fundamental for the development of the marine SDI for Malaysian waters zulaihi UTM 97 p.
