Due to high rate of rural-urban migration of workers to the city, high density high-rise housing are crucial to provide housing for them. However, individualistic lifestyle of urban population in modern high-rise housing eventually leads to poor community living where people live without depending on their neighbours. Poor community living in the long run causes social problems like crime, safety, stress, vandalism, cultural tension and threats from accidents. Hence, the importance of community living cannot be neglected as the necessary way of living in urban. Tracing the idea of community to its origin, religious and cultural value of village are the magnet where people come together as a community. Thus studying regional cultural activities and the conducive physical environment are important for community development in future high-rise housing. In the context of urban, there are villages that exist in the midst of the rapid urban development in Johor Bahru. Regardless of the rapid urban development surrounding them, the socio-cultural factor of these urban villages remained strong. Therefore research on the socio-cultural and physical environment qualities of these villages are conducted. The methodology adopted is social research comprising primary and secondary research. Data collected are analysed and appraised with conclusion. There are many elements consists of building programme and architectural value of urban village extracted for high-rise housing design reference in the future. It is hoped that the outcomes of the research provoke new architecture discourses on the development of Malaysian high-rise housing identity atiff UTM 68 p.
