Energy usage as operational cost is decided from the heat exchanger networks (HEN) design which has to consider for heat exchange area. While the investment cost is determined by the numbers of exchanger considering to different types, material, length and pressure factor of HE. This study endeavors to obtain a simultaneously method to calculate the area target and overall cost target for the synthesis of HEN by using Stream Temperature versus Enthalpy Plot (STEP) method. Area target considering to the differences on film heat transfer coefficient for each stream is achieved by vertical matching for the each segment on the STEP graph. A pair of streams for the each segment also represents the HEN design and utilities requirement with different types, material of construction, length and pressure factor. Cost targeting is calculated base on all of these factors and optimization is done to obtain the minimum financial for the capital and operational cost. Application of this method on several study case from open literature in previous works, obtain the accurately and easily for minimum area target and give the 5-9% of economic saving. Furthermore, this research can accomplish and completely explaining the STEP technique as a simultaneous tool to determine the total heat integration for the industries. atiff UTM 92 p.
