The method was developed as an alternative test in cases when difficulties were encountered by conventional Schmidt hammer and point load test to determine the index strength of weathered rock. The study also deals with the effect of moisture content on the strength of weathered sandstone and shale. A total of 60 rock samples were collected at the site and tested ranging from slightly weathered (Grade II) to highly weathered (Grade IV) state. The field study including the weathering identifications, Schmidt hammer and impact test were performed at the site while point load and moisture content were done at the laboratory. The developed impact test suggested that it correlates well with the strength of higher weathered rock (Grade IV) instead of lower weathering grade of rock materials. Samples preparation and testing for point load and moisture content test were performed based on the ISRM 1981 standards. The results revealed that the strength and qualities of material weaken with increasing of weathering grade. The sensitivity of rock strength also is due to changes in moisture content which the absorption seems to vary from various weathering grade. This study concludes that correlation between impact load and point load test create a good strength indicator for weaker rocks which could not be measured by Schmidt hammer practical01 UTM 142 p.
