It is well known that wide external columns contribute in the efficiency of the outer tube of a tube-in-tube building system in resisting the wind load. However, it is unknown on what the optimum ratio between the width and thickness of the column is so that the response of the building due to wind can be minimized. Therefore this analysis was done in order to find the relationship between the dimensions of exterior columns and the building responses. The natural frequencies and the displacements of the building will be analysed as the building response for this study. The building response will be analysed in along-wind, across-wind and torsional directions. The dimensions of the buildings were presented in length-breadth ratio where the cross-section area for exterior column is fixed for each case. Five different dimensions were used in this study, which are 1300 x 1300 mm, 1500 x 1125 mm, 1800 x 940 mm, 2000 x 850 mm and 2300 x 730 mm with length-breadth ratio of 1.0, 1.3, 1.9, 2.3, 3.0 respectively. All the modelling and analyses process was done by using structural software, STAADPro. Based on the data obtained from natural frequency analysis, the natural frequency increases as the length-breadth ratio increases therefore the building stiffness is increased as the length-breath ratio increases. But for across-wind direction, the results do not follow the same trend and there must be another factor that is affecting the natural frequency in the across-wind direction. For torsional direction, the change of natural frequency will be compared with the torque resisted by the building. The change of torque resisted is too small and that makes the value of natural frequency for torsional direction is almost constant. For displacements analysis, the data obtained for along-wind direction shows that the displacement decreased with the lengthbreadth ratio. Based on the results, the optimum dimension for exterior column is 1800 x 940 mm with length-breadth ratio of 1.9 because it shows an adequate building response compared with the other dimensions. practical01 UTM 106 p.
