Two available carrier recovery circuits, Costas loop and Pelet method, are evaluated along with a timing recovery circuit, early-late gate, regarding bit error rate and convergence time performance for different working variables and conditions such as frequency offset and number of samples per symbol. The evaluation shows a superiority of Pelet method over Costas loop in all aspects. For 8 samples per symbol case, the bit error rate performance of Pelet method is 0.3 dB and 0.9 dB better than Costas loop for frequency offset equal to zero and 1 kHz respectively. For 4 samples per symbol case, the performance loss of Costas loop increases rapidly to higher than 5 dB, whereas Pelet method keeps its performance loss at 0.7 dB. However, it needs a preamble length of 110 bits which is almost double of that needed in the case of 8 samples per symbol. Furthermore, it is shown that Pelet method combined together with early-late gate and convolutional coding (coding rate ½ and constraint length 9) successfully meet the design targets in order to achieve an air-to-ground real-time video streaming with good quality atiff UTM 57 p.
