Exchange relations include managerial support, supervisor support and coworker support. It probes the effects of exchange relations on both perceived organizational support and employee engagement. It also investigates the effects of perceived organizational support and employee engagement on turnover intentions. Furthermore, it entails the mediational roles played by both perceived organizational support and employee engagement. A cross sectional study was conducted using a survey research design. Based on a sample of 1,150 faculty members from 44 universities of Pakistan, 703 responded to the questionnaire. The sample was selected using multistage sampling technique. Analysis through structural equation modeling revealed that perceived organizational support is predicted by all three forms of exchange relations: managerial support (procedural justice, distributive justice, participation in decision, perceived autonomy and job security), supervisor support and coworker support. On the other hand, engagement was predicted only by managerial support (distributive justice, growth opportunities, perceived autonomy, role ambiguity and job security) and coworker support. Additionally, perceived organizational support mediates the relationship of procedural justice, participation in decision making and engagement. This study also finds that perceived organizational support does not influence turnover intentions but this relation is fully mediated by employee engagement. These results highlight that exchange relations are important predictors of employees’ perception of organizational support and engagement, and engagement helps in reducing turnover intentions which is the prevailing issue in higher educational institutions of Pakistan practical01 UTM 96 p.
