Rifin Azhar Khairuddin, supervisor Electrical engineering Also available in printed version Nowadays, the high traffic density on Malaysian roads due to rapid increase of the number of vehicles has become a serious issue for road traffic planner. Currently, pre-timed, semi-actuated and fully-actuated mode controllers are being used in most signalized intersections. However, currently mode of traffic controller has drawback which for pre-timed mode a signal whose timing is fixed and not change in response to change in traffic flow. The drawback of semi-actuated mode is a signal whose timing is effected when vehicle is detected on some approaches and for fully-actuated mode is a signal whose timing is influenced by vehicle detected, on all of the approaches. This report introduces a smart traffic light system by using fuzzy logic that controls the timing of the system to minimize waiting time with reduced cycle length and delay time while increasing the number of vehicles through the junction with improved capacity per lane. A MATLAB simulation and hardware development of traffic light system using fuzzy logic controller are presented. The fuzzy logic controller has been developed based on density of vehicle at green and red phases and arrival rate at current green phase. The output from the traffic light system using fuzzy controller is the duration time of green phase, junction candidate for the next green phase and the decision on whether to extend or terminate the green phase. The traffic light system is compared with pre-timed controller system. The results show that traffic light using fuzzy logic controller has better performance than pre-timed system in terms of cycle length and smooth rate of traffic flows for all junctions at three different traffic conditions, which are low, medium and high. In cycle length aspect, fuzzy logic controller is better than pre-timed controller by 25.83% at low traffic condition, 14.59% at medium traffic condition and 19.38% at high traffic condition. In smooth rate of traffic flow aspect, fuzzy logic controller can reduce delay time by 26.53% at low traffic condition, 25.58% at medium traffic condition and 2.17% at high traffic condition compared to pre-timed controller. Lastly, for capacity per lane aspect, fuzzy logic can improve capacity per lane of pre-timed controller by 47.76%, 17.65% and 8.83% at low, medium and high traffic condition zulaihi UTM 88 p.
