Khalid Che Rozid Mamat, supervisor Science Also available in printed version Since the last decade, the research interest in new zeolitic materials has increased. These zeotype structures exhibit improved catalytic and adsorptive capabilities in comparison with the classical aluminosilicates, leading up to the intensive reports on the titanium and silicon-based molecular sieves. In this study, Engelhard titanosilicate-4 (ETS-4), a molecular sieve having a composition wherein the synthesis mixture contained four different molar ratios, grown from titanium(IV) butoxide, sodium silicate, and silicon (silica gel) sources through conventional and microwave heating. Crystallization by microwave heating has shortened the synthesis time significantly, as compared to the conventional heating which yielded only an amorphous product. The synthesis was performed at a fixed frequency of 2.45 MHz for the crystallization time ranging from 50 min to 150 min. In addition, for comparison purposes, ETS-4 was synthesized by means of hydrothermal method at 200?C in 24-72 hours. Morphological analysis and surface characteristics of the products were carried out by utilizing X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The findings showed that ETS-4 was more preferably grown by hydrothermal heating, with a larger surface area, 588.99 m2/g and crystals with rectangular prism morphology. Besides, ETS-4 synthesized in 3 days with the highest alkalinity of synthesis mixture exhibits 100% crystallinity. The physicochemical properties of the prepared ETS-4 were affected in terms of degree of intergrowth, size, and morphology. ETS-4 particles of molar ratio 5H2O2:1TiO2:10SiO2:18NaOH:675H2O were subsequently ground finely and incorporated with sulphonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with a sulfonation degree of 0.47 and commercial membrane material, Nafion® 117 to produce the SPEEK/Nafion/ETS-4 composite membrane or mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for the study of gas separation performance. Gas permeation measurement shows high O2 and N2 permeability due to the molecular sieving effect (612.8 and 1164.6 GPU). Based on the permeability results, the MMM shows low O2/N2 selectivity which is 0.526 zulaihi UTM 88 p.
