Shahrizal Sunar, supervisor Computing Also available in printed version Handheld Augmented Reality (HAR) is a technology that allows the user to view and interact with virtual content in a real environment through a handheld display device. Most common HAR interaction techniques rely on touch-based or devicecentric based. However, these techniques cannot interact with distant Augmented Reality (AR) targets since the object is out of reach of the virtual arm. Distant and occlusion issues have been the remaining problems in the HAR interface. Certain twodimensional (2D) touch based with extended interaction on the device screen have not fulfilled the natural and intuitive manner due to common limitations of the display screen, which are finger occlusion on screen, limited screen size, and 2D input for three-dimensional (3D) interaction. Therefore, this study aimed to improve the markerless freehand interaction method in distant virtual objects for HAR. The methodology first determined the appropriate range and distance for the precise markerless freehand interaction selection method by performing investigation and analysis studies. Next was to propose an improved markerless freehand precise selection and manipulation technique. The final stage was to evaluate a markerless freehand interaction for HAR scenarios to precisely select the distant and occluded virtual target in HAR. The time performance of three distance conditions for each occlusion rate was recorded. Based on the results, this method was considerably more precise and faster than the benchmark method, which was the 2D Ray Casting. The research findings were significant as they allowed users to choose an AR target precisely based on distance and occlusion and then manipulate simple 3D objects by translating and rotating them. fahmimoksen UTM 162 p.
