Alshaye Zaidatun Tasir, supervisor Education Also available in printed version This study aims to examine the effectiveness of online problem-based learning (PBL) tasks on the problem-solving ability (PSA) and programming skills (PS) of secondary school students. A quantitative research design of a quasi-experimental research that involves quantitative and qualitative data was adopted in this study. The quantitative data were collected through questionnaire and performance tests, whereas the qualitative data were gathered from the students’ interactions in Facebook groups and interviews. Purposive non-random sampling method was used to select two secondary schools in Riyadh. Then, a clustered random sampling technique was carried out to select four classes, consist of 120 students who were enrolled in Computer and Information Technology 2 (CIT2). The classes were divided equally into an online PBL (experimental group) (n=60) and non-online PBL (control group) (n=60) with two classes in each group. A problem-solving inventory (PSI) questionnaire was used to measure PSA before and after the treatment, and pre-/post programming performance tests were used to assess students’ performance. The students underwent 8 weeks of learning tasks by using online PBL via Facebook groups. The results of Quade’s ANCOVA test revealed that there is a significant improvement in PSA for the online PBL group versus the non-online PBL group using a pre-PSI test as a covariate. Moreover, Quade’s ANCOVA test indicates that there is a significant improvement in PS in the post-performance test in favour of the online PBL group using a pre-performance test as a covariate. Spearman's rho analysis shows a significant correlation between PSA and PS among students who use online PBL tasks through Facebook. The findings from the Facebook transcripts showed that online PBL tasks encouraged students to improve PS and higher-order thinking (HOT) skills. Online transcripts showed that most students demonstrated the analysis level followed by the synthesis level of HOT skills. Finally, based on the findings, the researcher proposed a suitable framework of students’ learning patterns on online PBL tasks through Facebook that were associated with the PSA and PS of secondary school students. fahmimoksen UTM 298 p.
