Saad, supervisor Mechanical engineering Not available This thesis presents the design of a developed fishing reel adaptable to different spool sizes that can be equipped with a commercial handlining spool that comes in various sizes. A handlining spool is a circular-shaped spool that holds lines. It is operated manually by the human hand. Since the handlining spool is controlled by using our hands, there are limitations to some actions. For example, we cannot use a handlining spool for beachcasting since we cannot cast the line far enough to the deeper side of the sea. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design and develop a fishing reel adaptable to different spool sizes which can improve the limitations of the handlining spool. The developed fishing reel can hold a fishing line with a capacity of 30 pounds, which is equivalent to the average drag of a big saltwater fish. The characteristics and features to be implemented on this developed fishing reel have been studied to develop a new design. Solidworks CAE Software was used to design and develop a new model of fishing reel that can withstand a fishing line with a capacity of 30 pounds. The concept of reverse engineering is applied to the existing reels available on the market to further understand the function decomposition along with the mechanism of the different types of fishing reels. To analyse the model for effective manufacturing and assembly, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) was done towards the design. The effectiveness of the developed reel in handling 30 pounds was proven by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The fishing reel was successfully designed and developed so that it would be able to adapt to different sizes of spool. shafika UTM 130 p.
