Saad, supervisor Mechanical engineering Not available Oil palm is one of Malaysia’s major agricultural industries and it cover approximately 5 million hectares of the land of this country. The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) produces fruit bunches continuously for the duration of its economic life, beginning the second or third year after planting, in the axils of its fronds. It is a difficult and dangerous process to harvest fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from tall oil palm trees. Despite production peaks and troughs, bunches ripen all year round in ideal settings. The necessity to maximize oil yield and oil quality while lowering labour costs must be compromised during harvest. For a palm tree that had only 3 metres of height, the harvesting process would be quite simple where it could be done by only using 2 metres pole attached with chisel. However, for a tall palm tree that had grown to 30 feet or around 9 metres of height, the process is very difficult where the worker needs to use 12 metres pole attached with sickle and needs to be skilled enough to balance it and cutting it with specific cutting force. Recently, with the growing issue of a skilled labour scarcity due to the outbreak of pandemic, Covid-19, it has become imperative to mechanize the harvesting process. To boost harvesting productivity, a variety of harvesting techniques and technologies have been utilized and developed over time. In this study, the research and development of the mechanized harvesting solutions was conducted while reviewing all the details needed in harvesting palm oil. The design development of the solution is done following the guidelines of design process. The details of the proposed design also being shown throughout the drawing and the modelling done using the Computer Aided Design (CAD) software which is Solidworks. Through the design proposed in this paper, further analysis also being conducted for the design which include the functional analysis, failure mode effect analysis (FMEA), design efficiency, manufacturing cost analysis and engineering analysis. The main aim for conducting the analysis is to ensure that the product designed is practical to use and to ease the manufacturing. After done with the analysis, it will be followed by the building of the virtual prototype and a working model to illustrate the design in real-life.
