The beam-column joint transfer loads between the connecting elements in a structure. It is a crucial zone in a reinforced concrete moment resisting frame. Beam-column joint is prone to joint shear failure when the joint region experience high shear stress, which will lead to total collapse of a building. However, the existing designed beam-column joints in accordance to BS 8110 are insufficient of transverse reinforcement and anchorage capacity. Hence, this study investigated the effect of pre-tensioned stiffened steel angles as retrofitted method for exterior beam-column joint under monotonic loading. In this study, half-scale joints represented a component of reinforced concrete were modelled which include a control joint and joint retrofitted with pre-tensioned stiffened steel angles known as confined joint. The key objective of this study is to develop numerical non-linear FEA model to evaluate the unconfined and confined beam-column joint subjected to monotonic loading. Comparisons of failure mode and structural behaviour between unconfined and confined beam-column joint were carried out in this research. The results showed that the use of pre-tensioned stiffened steel angles as retrofitted method was able to transform the failure mode from joint failure to beam failure mode. Pre-tensioned steel angles able to strengthen the joint by increasing the load carrying capacity and ductility by 63.8% and 162.6% respectively. Furthermore, the confined modelled showed lower rate of stiffness degradation. The strain of beam longitudinal reinforcement of confined joint at column face was 56% lower than that of unconfined joint. However, the strain at edge of pre-tensioned steel angles for confined concrete was higher than that of unconfined joint. This showed the relocation of plastic hinge away from joint region to beam, which fulfil the requirement of strong-column weak-beam zulraizam UTM 84 p.
