Saad, supervisor Mechanical engineering Also available in printed version In recent years, plastic injection molding have become one of the most frequently used manufacturing process in the industry. However, the quality of the products manufactured depends on a lot of parameters. Thus, it is important to identify the optimum process parameters setting for a specific product in order to minimize defects and achieve the maximum possible quality. The aim of the research is to study the effects of process parameters in plastic injection molding on the quality of disposable food container, to identify the significance factors for single and multiple response by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and to improve the quality characteristics for single and multiple response by optimizing the process parameters. The process parameters that have been studied in this thesis are part thickness, melt temperature, mold temperature, injection time, packing pressure and packing time. Experimental plan was conducted by using fractional factorial design (Resolution IV). The optimum process parameters setting for volumetric shrinkage response are 0.9mm of part thickness, 250? of melt temperature, 50? of mold temperature, 2s of injection time, 40MPa of packing pressure and 10s of packing time. The combination of the process parameters setting results in 13.72% of volumetric shrinkage. For warpage response, the optimum process parameters setting are 1mm of part thickness, 270? of melt temperature, 70? of mold temperature, 1s of injection time, 50MPa of packing pressure and 5s of packing time which results in 1.456mm of warpage. For air traps response, the optimum process parameters setting are 1mm of part thickness, 270? of melt temperature, 50? of mold temperature, 1s of injection time, 40MPa of packing pressure and 10s of packing time which results in 22 air traps. Lastly, for Overall Evaluation Criterion (OEC), the optimum process parameters setting are 1mm of part thickness, 250? of melt temperature, 50? of mold temperature, 2s of injection time, 50MPa of packing pressure and 10s of packing time which contributes to 78.718% of total OEC. For confirmation test, the results between the predicted and actual value are very close which results in very small error that are 1.38% for volumetric shrinkage, 4.22% for warpage, 0.86% for air traps and 1.12% for OEC. Thus, It can be concluded that the experimental results are strongly correlate with the prediction results. shafika UTM 92 p.
