Mannan Al-Naib, Uday M. Basheer, supervisor Mechanical engineering Not available Turbocharging is a common technique used to improve power density, reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emission of an internal combustion engine. The current material uses to fabricate the turbine volute casing is tungsten which is expensive and has high density, made the turbocharger weighty and costly. To improve the efficiency, the thermal barrier coating is chosen as an alternative for thermal insulation of components operating under a high-temperature environment. This study will introduce a method to fabricate a sustainable functionally graded thermal barrier ceramic coating for high temperature on the substrate to be used as turbine volute casing material of automotive turbocharger. Then characterize the evolution of microstructure, mechanical properties of these thermal barrier ceramic coating samples with using different formula. There are various methods in the markets that offer different coating technique, but the major constraint is cost and skill. In this research, nickel alloys substrate used as a sample where we are going to introduce brushing technique, the most affordable which does not requires high skills workers to perform the coating. While the composition of the slurry was 20wt%YSZ 60wt%Ni 20wt%Cr, 15wt%YSZ 65wt%Ni 20wt%Cr and 25wt%YSZ 55wt%Ni 20wt%Cr. The results showed that the 15wt%YSZ 65wt%Ni 20wt%Cr formula has good adhesion and mechanical properties compared to the rest of formulas. The microstructural analysis carried out to characterize the coating deposited on the substrate. The mechanical properties of the coating evaluated using the scratch test and microhardness test to examine the integrity of the coating. fahmimoksen UTM 67 p.
