Palm oil plantation had been expanded and increased from 5.74 million hectares in 2016 to 5.81 million hectares in 2017. However, the increasing of oil palm plantation contributes to large quantities of biomass waste such as fronds, trunks, empty fruit bunch, palm kernel and mesocarp fibre dumped at the site. Empty fruit bunch has the highest cellulose content which is the main substrate for production of reducing sugars. The complex crystallinity structure of empty fruit bunch acts as the barrier which makes the enzymatic hydrolysis rate lower, leading to low reducing sugar and succinic acid production. Ferric (III) chloride solution was used for pretreatment of EFB before simultaneous saccharification fermentation. The fermentation process condition for succinic acid production by Actinobacillus succinogenes was optimized by varying the temperature, pH and solid loading while the SSF media composition was optimized by varying nitrogen source and magnesium carbonate loading. The sugar production and succinic acid fermentation performance were analyzed using DNS assay and high performance liquid chromatography. According to the research, it was found that the solid loading was significant in succinic acid production while concentration of MgCO3 and time were not significant. Maximum peak was not reached due to time constraint that further elongate contour plot required for optimal point to be reached zainurin UTM 68 p.
