Despite the rapid growth of the elderly, there is a demand for achieving a �happy life�. According to the �biophilia� and �Person-Environment fit� theories, old people are exposed to neighbourhood environments in their daily lives, and the characteristics of these neighbourhood environments have the potential to raise their happiness. It should be noted that nature relatedness is a predictor of happiness. The objectives in this study are to identify characteristics of neighbourhood environment that contribute to happiness of old people, to propose and validate a model of happiness among these people in the context of neighbourhood environment, and to evaluate the importance of nature relatedness and neighbourhood environment for old people in the context of happiness based on the model. This study developed a research model based on a comprehensive literature review. The quantitative method was adopted to test four hypotheses of the model. A survey questionnaire was employed to examine the effects of identified factors of neighbourhood environment on happiness of old people in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. For the preliminary study, the questionnaire was validated by experts and 35 questions were piloted. Next, based on the designed procedure 222 from 250 distributed questionnaires were collected and analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique. The four defined hypotheses were tested and the results supported that the physical environment, social cohesion, social support, and nature relatedness have positive effect on the happiness of old people. Besides that, the results indicated that social support to be the most influential factor, followed by nature relatedness, social cohesion, and physical environment. This finding is one of the notable evaluation of happiness among old people and it contributes to the fields of psychology, sociology and urban design.
