Fauzi Abdullah, supervisor Electrical engineering Also available in printed version In a typical large office building, lighting, heating, and cooling systems are the main electricity consumer, making those systems the best targets for energy savings. For one government office building in Putrajaya, the expenditure on electricity bill alone can reach up to nearly RM 3 million a year, which is a significant cost deserving serious attention. Commonly, large office buildings are equipped with Building Control System that controls all major electrical and mechanical equipments in the building. Proper operation scheduling of these equipments may provide opportunity to reduce electricity bill. However it also depends on the subscription of electricity tariff structure. By having own renewable energy source to generate electricity such as photovoltaic is another option for cost saving since it may able to reduce the maximum demand cost. In this report, different strategies for electricity cost savings are investigated; i) Load Rescheduling, ii) Tariff Switching and iii) Photovoltaic Panel Installation. Hourly load profile data for the building and the actual output from photovoltaic panel for many days are recorded and analyzed. As addition to the existing Time of Use (ToU) tariff, the new Enhanced Time of Use (ETOU) tariff for commercial customers is also used in the study. From the comparative analysis, the strategy of having Photovoltaic system with the current TOU tariff offers the best electricity cost savings snhas UTM 61 p.
