The connection system of precast concrete structure must be designed to satisfy the structural performance of a monolithic concrete structure. Conventional bar lapping system is one of available precast connections but it has long development length especially for large diameter steel bar to be embedded in precast structure. Splice sleeve connecter is an alternative precast connection system, splicing reinforcement bars extruded from structural elements to ensure continuity among them. In the construction market, splice sleeve connecters are mostly proprietary connectors that result in high cost. Therefore, the researchers aim to innovate new splice connecters that would fulfil the requirement of the Malaysian construction industry. Plain rebars are often used in precast concrete elements. The provision of plain rebar along either side of the precast joint will strengthen its resistance and provide greater ductility. However, to fully utilize plain rebar as reinforcement for concrete, some aspects of their behaviour have to be determined, including bond and anchorage in concrete. This project reports, the performance of bond strength of plain rebar in concrete. The parameter effects of different pitch and inner diameter of spiral reinforcement, number of transverse bar and size of main bar was investigated to find the increase of bond strength between plain reinforcement and concrete. Results of direct pullout tests of plain bars in concrete are presented. The results show that parameters do not increase the performance of bond strength of plain reinforcement in concrete zulaihi UTM 96 p.
