A suitable method for the analysis of pesticide residues in river water sample was investigated in this study based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography (GC). Sampling was conducted at Syarikat Air Johor, Skudai Water Treatment Plant at the raw water intake point. Pesticide residues were extracted by two different solvents which are acetonitrile and ethyl acetate. The river water sample was filtered and passed through the C18 cartridge which was preconditioned with methanol and purified water at the flow-rate of 4 mL min-1 using the SPE vacuum manifold. After the sample was applied, the cartridge was kept under vacuum for 5 min to remove any residual water. The analytes retained on the cartridge were eluted by 4 mL of acetonitrile and ethyl acetate. The effluents were collected into vials and condensed to dryness under a gentle flow of nitrogen at room temperature and re-dissolved with acetonitrile for analysis. The presence of triazine and chlorothalonil was determined using gas chromatography mass selective detector (GC-MSD). From the results of the study, calibration graphs are linear in the range from 100 to 1000 �g/L for triazine with coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.995 and 50000 to 30 000 �g/L with coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.994 for chlorothalonil. The limits of detection (LOD) were 100 �g/L for triazine and 3300 �g/L for chlorothalonil. Meanwhile, the limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 340 �g/L for triazine and 10900 �g/L for chlorothalonil. From this study, the concentration of triazine were 1300 �g/L with acetonitrile as the eluting solvent and 2800 �g/L with ethyl acetate as the eluting solvent. These concentrations did not exceed the Malaysian allowable limit which is not more that 50 mg/L. While, chlorothalonil was not found in the analysis and its can be assumed that Sg. Skudai were not polluted by chlorothalonil zulaihi UTM 54 p.
