This study focused on water quality monitoring in three rivers in the state of Johor, Malaysia. The chosen rivers were Sungai UTM, Sungai Gunung Pulai and Sungai Melana. There are two methods applied in this study; the first method is identification of invertebrates using guidelines by Department of Drainage and Irrigation whereas the second method involves chemical analysis. The water quality parameters involved were DO, pH, BOD, COD, AN and SS. Water Quality Index is then calculated based on Department of Environment guidelines. From the WQI results Sungai UTM and Sungai Gunung Pulai are classified as Class II showing clean rivers whereas Sungai Melana was classified as Class III or slightly polluted. The BOD value of Sungai Melana was between 4.6-5.6 mg/L and its COD values are in the range of 23-28 mg/L. From the BOD and COD concentration recorded its showed that this river is polluted. The Biological Water Quality Index (BWQI) at Sungai UTM was calculated as 5.11-6.00 whereas Sungai Gunung Pulai scored in between 5.38-6.17 showing both rivers are clean. At Sungai UTM invertebrates classified as nymphs, larvae, insects, crustacea and molluscs were found. BWQI at Sungai Melana was calculated as 2.80-3.67 and the group of invertebrates found is classified as nymphs, larvae, insects, crustacea, molluscs and worms. The results show that using the BWQI and WQI will give accurate answers in order to determine river water quality. zulaihi UTM 96 p.
