Amongst various challenges, project delay is categorized as major component of construction management process and has become the key factor to gain success in a project. Delay during assessment of Extension of Time (EOT) claim process also faced by construction practitioners. This research aims to identify the main reasons for application of EOT by contractors in Government school projects in Sabah, to identify reasons for delay in assessing EOT and to recommend approaches to improve the existing process of EOT claim assessment especially in JKR Sabah. Data collection from JKR Government Report and a 5-points Likert scale questionnaire survey targeted to construction practitioners have been used as the instrument to carry out this study in order to achieve the aim of this research. The analysis of EOT certificates revealed that Superintending Officers instructions, delay in giving possession of site and delay on the part of artists, tradesmen or others engaged by the Government contributed most to the delay. Findings from the questionnaire survey revealed that poor submission by contractor, late submission of claim by the contractor and Engineer, and Architect or Quantity Surveyor too busy with other tasks are the top three (3) different reasons for late assessment of EOT claim. From the above findings, the researcher recommended two solutions to minimize the problems, namely improvement to the existing process of EOT claim assessment and the usage of checklist in application of EOT by claimant. These findings are expected to offer a significant contribution to implementing agencies, thus helping to identify areas for further improvement and it is hoped that these findings will guide efforts to enhance the performance of the construction industry. zulaihi UTM 93 p.
