However, it has limitations such as poor medicating doses of the extracted CA in the human body and easily degraded by the action of external sources like light or oxygen. Hence, CA encapsulated silica aerogel (SA) was developed in this study to preserve the bioactive compound of CA. The extracted form (0.3 and 100.0 mg/mL) and powder form (0.1, 1.0 and 5.0 g) of CA were encapsulated in SA via sol gel process from rice husk ash as silica source. CA encapsulated SA (CA-SA) samples were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning-electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analyzer, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface analysis. The characterization had proven that the porous structure of SA encapsulated CA remained unchanged after the loading process. The antioxidant study was carried out using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method and CA-SA extract showed a higher percentage of antioxidant activity than CA-SA powder. The antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli ATCC 11229, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212. Determination of antibacterial activity were performed by soaking SA, CA and all CA-SA samples in bacteria culture for 2 hours prior to the dropped plate technique. All CA-SA samples showed good antibacterial activity against S. aureus ATCC 6538. In conclusion, the encapsulation of CA into porous SA via sol-gel process was successfully synthesized with good application of CA-SA as new antioxidant and antibacterial agents fahmimoksen UTM 107 p.
