Ridzuan Shaharuddin, supervisor Mechanical engineering Also available in printed version Vortex-induced Vibrations is a well-known fluid flow phenomenon, in which bluff and cylindrical object immersed in moving water will experience a phenomenon where the currents caused the object to be excited by forces caused by vortex shedding. In order to suppress this effect, few passive suppression device being introduced such as helical strakes, fairings which will also resulted in increasing overall construction costing, require high maintenance, require complex design, additional weight to the cylindrical object and modify the geometrical structure which may increase the drag. Installation of a control rod can be a good alternative option, but before that, appropriate range of control rod’s diameter should be determined first in order to have maximum suppression of vibration effect. Experimental works on flexibly mounted enclosed smooth rigid circular cylinder were conducted using circulating flow tank in determining the dynamic response of the bare circular cylinder and with control rod attached over a range of flow velocities. A total of four test were conducted using a bare 51 mm outer diameter circular cylinder and circular cylinder with three different control rod having diameter of 8 mm, 16 mm and 19 mm. The Reynolds number for the current study ranges from 4900 to 15000 and its corresponding reduced velocities may vary up to 7. Circular cylinder displacement with and without control rod was measured and recorded. From these data, the response amplitude ratio A/D and percentage reduction of vibration effect were calculated and presented. From the results obtained, it can be seen that the 8 mm control rod having highest percentage of reduction, which is 94.42%, followed by 16 mm and 19 mm respectively. It was also found that as the diameter of control rod decreases from 19 mm to 8 mm with respect to the 51 mm diameter of circular cylinder, the percentage reduction of Vortex-induced Vibrations will increases zulaihi UTM 116 p.
