However, employees were not prepared for the change and did not possess the correct communication skills to work with virtual team. Poor team engagement and ineffective communications had affected work delivery progress and information exchange. A similar situation had been observed in the quality department of a research and development company. The purpose of the study was to identify key contributing factors to virtual team communication effectiveness, to understand usefulness of communication skill training in improving virtual team communication and to explore the effectiveness of communication guidelines in maintaining virtual team communication effectiveness. A mixed method approach of quantitative and qualitative were applied in this study. During research cycle 1, quantitative data were collected from 15 quality engineers and technicians through survey questionnaires before and after intervention was introduced. The statistical data analysis outcome had revealed the team common goal commitment and team trust had positive and significant relationship with virtual team communication effectiveness. Besides, it was also found that there was statistically significant improvement on team communication effectiveness, common goal commitment and trust after communication training was introduced to participants. During research cycle 2, qualitative data were collected through interview sessions with 3 respondents from managerial level. From the analysis, it was observed that team communication effectiveness and environment improved after communication guidelines were introduced. The study outcome could help to increase virtual team awareness on virtual communication best practices.
