Rajali Jalal Adi Maimun Abdul Malik, supervisor Mechanical engineering Also available in printed version This research presents a fuzzy logic based for assessing the collision avoidances for ships transiting the Straits of Malacca and Straits of Singapore; the busiest straits in the world, occupying more than one thousand ships traffic daily. The data of the ships traffic in both straits were obtained from automatic identification system (AIS) receiver installed in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). A MATLAB program has been developed to retrieve the data and assess the collision risks and collision avoidances by using fuzzy logic at a specified ships traffic area and period of time. The fuzzy membership function for collision risk assessment, which has been considered for analysis, is inclusive of Distance to the Closest Point Approach (DCPA) and Time to the Closest Point Approach (TCPA). Meanwhile, the fuzzy membership function for collision avoidance decision making is constituted of collision risk and collision condition. The decision making has been formulated in accordance with the International Maritime Organization Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), 1972, to avoid conflicts that might occur during sea navigation in the straits. Three critical collision conditions have been evaluated for collision avoidance decision making, which are head on situation, crossing situation, and overtaking situation. The results show that the recommended decision makings from the developed fuzzy logic program are indeed in accordance to the COLREGS. Another important result for evaluating one selected own ship to multi target ship has also given a good decision making output. It showed that, by using the recommended decision makings from the fuzzy logic program, the collision risk between the own ship towards the multi target ship were decreased. Therefore, the fuzzy logic program complied the COLREGs Rule theoretically zulaihi UTM 133 p.
