However, due to the recent expansion of wireless communications, it is impossible to cope with the allocation of spectrum, as it is a limited finite resource. Therefore, to utilize the unoccupied bands, to resolve the spectrum scarcity for new wireless applications, and to make spectrum allocation more dynamic, Cognitive Radio (CR) technology is introduced. CR concept has been applied to many of the ad hoc technologies including WSN. Cognitive Radio Sensor Network (CRSN) is a multi-channel capable network, that inherent some of the challenges of traditional WSNs like limited power source and hardware capacity. Handling mobility in energy-restricted WSNs and CRSNs requires a careful trade-off in energy efficiency, throughput, and robustness, where in the case of CRSNs, spectrum mobility make it more difficult for mobile users to traverse and provide seamless and reliable communications across network. The first part of this study focused on developing a novel mobility-aware Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol called MT-MAC for WSN, to overcome the high power consumption of current problems. For this purpose, MT-MAC divides node in different clusters and use Link Quality Indicators (LQI) and Radio Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) to precisely detect mobility and then handover mobile nodes across the clusters. Simulation results showed that MT-MAC consumed 20 to 65% less power consumption compared to existing protocols. In the second part of the study, an efficient cross-layer mobility and spectrum-aware MAC protocol has been introduced for CRSN by considering the multi-channel cognitive enabled environment. Novel spectrum-aware cluster formation and maintenance, and efficient cluster-head selection are also proposed to reduce the overall network overhead. In addition, a novel routing mechanism is developed to accommodate the proposed MAC protocol. The simulation results showed that proposed protocol outperforms existing MAC protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio, power consumption and packet transmission delay, up to 5%, 30% and 25%, respectively. Therefore, by proposing these two novel mobility-aware MAC protocols, the study has successfully contributed to efficient mobility handling in both dynamic WSNs and CRSNs. sof UTM 156 p.
