Rapid urbanization, informal development, and urban sprawling amid rapid urban growth are few of the major problems confronting urban areas in developing countries in recent years. This research examined how urban land use pattern resulting from urban growth has impacted the intra urban road transportation system resulting in excessive traffic congestion during peak hours and increased carbon emission concentration emitted from the traffic. A combination of methods comprising Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (RS/GIS) were used in the study. Spatial analysis of data were carried out using the ArcGIS 10.2 software. Two sets of questionnaires were administered. Respondents were drawn from household urban commuters, n=600 and private transport facility owners, n=200. Collected data were analysed using frequency analysis. Findings from the research revealed the following: steady expansion of the built up area by 111.76% over the past thirty (30) years, gradual fragmentation of the urban landscape is supported by spatial metric indicators of an average Normalized Landscape Shape Index (NLSI) =0.018, average Fractal Dimension Index (FD) =1.29, and Large Built up Patch Index (LBPI) average is 25.41. In addition, the spatial metrics are supported by falling population density over the years. The research further confirmed the mono centric form of Kaduna, with 54% of all commuters’ trips directed towards the city center. An average traffic volume of 5,938 PCU per hour was recorded, while carbon emission into the ambient air of the city has values ranging between l,457ppm to l,884ppm which is far above the acceptable safe limit of 250 - 350ppm. An Environmental Sustainability Performance Table was developed for the city to guide urban stakeholders on enhancing environmental performance of the city towards sustainability. The repositioning of land administrative system, guiding urban growth toward the concept of compact growth and entrenchment of a mass transit road transport system to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emission were some of the policy approach measures suggested for the city zulaihi UTM 292 p.
