The madrasah not only functioned as a place for propagating Islamic education in the form of teaching and learning, but also acts as a scholarly communal centre. In recent years, the orientation of many madrasahs in Malaysia had been transformed to suit to the demands of the national curriculum for the reason of increasing the economic prospects of madrasah graduates. In this context, the multi-function utilization of many madrasahs in Malaysia were transformed – rather than function as a scholarly communal centre located within the vicinity of settlements. However, it became a place of exclusive education only for Muslim enrolment separated from the community as a single function independent entity. The objective of this research hence is to identify the influence of the community highlighted by the Reformist Islamic (Jemaah Tabligh and PAS) in Malaysia on school-owned architectural design of this group. Madrasah Al-Rahmaniah in Lubuk Tapah, Kelantan and Madrasah Kubang Bujuk, Terengganu were chosen as a case study for its status as the oldest traditional madrasah in Malaysia as well as its unique representation with much consideration towards Islamic education. Data collection method will be from semiotic method, site observation, literature review, and interview to gather all the evidence on the selected madrasahs. Findings indicate that the design of madrasah is influenced by the ideologies of the madrasah’s ownership from traditionalist reformist Islamic group who emphasis on the values of local community. This madrasah design has become a successful educational center in Malaysia. The findings enlighten designers and scholars on how a traditional madrasah design fulfils the functions of human needs due to its embedded communal values for the benefit of propagating Islamic education in the future zulaihi UTM 321 p.
