Although studio is an important hub of architectural teaching and learning, there is a lack of empirical research data of the studio especially in the perspective of person-environment relationship. The main objective of this research is thus identifying architecture students’ preference and prioritisation of studio attributes. This research is based on the sequential exploratory mixed methods design. The results of the first method (qualitative) helped in developing the second method (quantitative). Therefore, this study was conducted in two stages using two research models namely Means-End Chain (MEC) and Best-Worst Scaling (BWS). The targeted respondents comprised architecture students from University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), Malaysia. In the first stage, MEC research model was applied on 25 respondents via laddering interviews. Results from this approach brought out 16 key studio attributes falling under five categories namely Physiological Facilities, Information and Communications Technology, Indoor Environment Quality, Territoriality, Furniture, and Reference. Identification of these attributes is driven by six main values including Achievement, Security, Self-direction, Hedonism, Conformity, and Power. In the second stage, BWS research model was applied to evaluate and rank 16 studio attributes derived using MEC research model. This was carried out by method of a questionnaire survey on 168 respondents. Results from BWS revealed that 16 studio attributes can be organized based on their relative level of importance. In addition, ANOVA tests also disclosed that preferred studio attributes are not significantly influenced by gender. However, selection of the six studio attributes is influenced by year of study. This study has successfully established a set of studio attributes in environmental quality profile that can be incorporated into studio design. Application of both MEC and BWS is proven a viable approach to evaluate students’ preference and prioritisation of studio attributes based on their perception zulaihi UTM 336 p.
