Many functions of ERM in an organization rely very heavily on corporate’s intellectual capital (IC), known as non -physical assets and capital, but empirical studies which examined the effect of IC and its components on ERM are scarce. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence regarding the exact effect of ERM and IC on the financial and non-financial performance among firms of financial sector. Furthermore, previous studies on ERM-firm performance have mostly focused on bivariate analyses. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine firstly, the effects of selected IC ’s dimensions (knowledge, training, technology, organizational culture and organizational trust) on ERM; secondly, the effect of ERM on a firm’s performance; thirdly, the relationship between IC and its components and a firm’s performance, and finally, the moderating role of IC on ERM-firm performance relationship. Data were collected via a questionnaire survey among 84 Iranian financial institutions. Census sampling method was applied. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Partial Least Squares (PLS). Findings indicated that ERM has a positive and significant effect on a firm’s performance. IC has positive and significant effect on ERM implementation and a moderating effect on the relationship between ERM and financial performance. This study contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the effect of ERM as it includes non-financial performance, existence of IC as a moderator variable between ERM and firm financial performance, and the status of ERM and IC in financial institutions of Iran. As a practical contribution, managers and organizations can use IC as an instrument to increase ERM implementation and its effect on a firm’s performance.
