Fatin Izzati Khairuddin Nursyafreena Attan, supervisor Science Also available in printed version Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) is an abundant agro-industrial waste which is available in huge quantities in Malaysia. This study was conducted to investigate the potential of SCB as a source of cellulose and nanocellulose (NC) since it has many applications for industrial’s usage. Synthesis of NC involved three different chemical treatments including bleaching, alkali treatment and acid hydrolysis. In bleaching process, the SCB was refluxed in buffer solution of acetic acid, sodium chlorite and distilled water for 20 hours to obtain holocellulose. Next, holocellulose undergo alkali treatment for 5 hours with alkali (17% v/v sodium hydroxide solution) to yield cellulose. Finally dried nanocellulose was obtained, by acid hydrolysis of cellulose with 9 M sulphuric acid for 5 hours followed by lyophilized. The structures present in the SCB, cellulose and NC were characterized by using FTIR. It was shown that the peak at 1604 cm-1, predominantly contributed from the aromatic C=C stretching of aromatic ring in the lignin, were absence in the cellulose and NC spectra due to removal of lignin. The morphology of NC was successfully characterized using FESEM and the structure of NC was rod-like shaped with diameter range 17.0 to 24.2 nm. The crystallinity indices of SCB, cellulose and NC were calculated using XRD and it was revealed that NC has the highest crystallinity index (58.0%). Finally, TGA was used to study the thermal behaviour of SCB, cellulose, and NC. Results show that NC have the highest thermal stability compared to SCB and cellulose due to the removal of hemicelluloses and lignin. From this study, it was approved that SCB can be the source of cellulose for NC extraction. With better crystallinity and higher thermal stability, the NC prepared have high potential for further applications zulaihi UTM 47 p.
