Foad Abdul Hamid, supervisor Mechanical engineering Also available in printed version A recent test method was developed to test the durability of a mounting pivot structure in a vacuum cleaner except this test method was done specifically for actual plastic part. An optimization of this tester to be used during development and prototyping stage would be a great advantage. Hence, a correlation between these two different materials, plastic and prototype, from two different stages needs to be found so that failure could be predicted at an earlier stage. The study replicates all the test methods and settings from plastic part which is by attaching a weight block onto the pivot structure that is attached to a shaker table with an impact force of 17g. The preliminary result shows a better fatigue life of SLS prototype compare to plastic sample through 90% confidence interval of plastic data. However, on the actual test, the result reveals that prototype parts show a different failure mode even when the same test is conducted. The analysis done through FEA later shows that a clearance between the assembly of the pivot structure and cap, that is attached to the pivot structure, causes the screw to absorb the stress instead of the part. So, one of the suggestions is to redesign the cap so it is robust over for repeated use zulaihi UTM 64 p.
