Although adequate in other parts of the world, an arc fault should also be protected for. The objective of this work is to inspect the ability to indicate arc fault on the low cost concept of permanent fault indicator, using a high resistance neon bulb normally used in electrical test pen. A neon bulb placed (in series with a current limiting resistor) between the upstream and downstream of a circuit breaker can indicate presence of a short circuit condition occurring downstream in a safe manner. This study utilizes the light dependent resistor (LDR) sensor as a light sensor to investigate the glow of the neon bulb when arc fault occurs. Early results from this experiment showed that the brightness of the neon lamp indicator decreases with decreasing current flowing through it due to the permanent fault. However, the neon lamp brightness and current flowing through it fluctuates in arc fault condition. Therefore, the low cost concept of permanent fault indicator would be used to indicate arc faults with more known characteristics of arc condition in tandem with earth fault and short circuit indicator in simple diagnostic circuit. Improvements in differentiating the chosen characteristics of the neon glow between arc and short circuit will be required fahmimoksen UTM 64 p.
