Halil Zaiton Haron, supervisor Civil engineering Also available in printed version Transverse Rumble Strips (TRS) acts as a safety precaution or measures that alert inattentive drivers from potential dangers such as crashing to the side of the road or head on collision with vehicle at the opposite lane. However, there are some reports suggested that the noise produced by TRS are annoyance to residence. This study investigates the impulsivity characteristics of noise produced when single lightweight vehicle passing on the TRS. The objective of this study were to determine the increase of sound level and to evaluate the impulsivity of noise due to single lightweight vehicles transit on road with and without TRS profiles. Two TRS profiles namely middle overlapped (MO) and middle layer overlapped (MLO) were selected. The selection based on the TRS that prefered by local authorities in Malaysia, specifically in Johor state. Three types of single lightweight vehicles were used as test vehicle which include hatchback car, passenger car and multipurpose vehicle (MPV). These vehicles were tested at speed of 30km/h, 50km/h and 70km/h. The increase of sound level was evaluated by conducting noise measurement using type 1 sound level meter (SLM).Impulsivity characteristics were measured from noise indices such as LAeq, LAFmax, LAIeq and LAImax. Results shows that TRS increases the sound level produced by lightweight vehicles by at most 6dBA. Furthermore, TRS produces impulsive sound behavior to all lightweight vehicles tested on every speed. These results proved that TRS produces significant impact that create annoyance to nearby residence and can be classified as traffic noise pollution fahmimoksen UTM 68 p.
