In Malaysia especially in the lower area, flood might happen frequently in a year. In real situation of flood, it might dangerous for researcher to do on-site studies. The understanding on hydraulics and mechanics of meandering rivers due to floodingThe objectives of this study are to investigate the characteristics of the non-vegetated natural meandering river during flooding and to study the hydraulics parameter such as velocity, Manning’s n, Froude number and Reynolds number. The effects of the non-vegetated floodplain are studied by using a rectangular flume in the Hydraulics Laboratory, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The scale down of the meandering river model is 1:200. The results on the variation of horizontal and vertical bed profile and velocity along the main channel presented in this paper. Experimental Manning’s n ranged between 0.021 to 0.039. The computed Froude and Reynolds numbers indicated that the subcritical turbulent flow took place in the experimental flume. Velocity are depending on the surface roughness of the channel. It has been found that the manning’s coefficient really affects the movement of the bed profile. Meandering river can be easily transported the sediment if no vegetated on the floodplain.
